SHAVUOT/PENTECOST
The Giving of the Torah/The Instruction of God

A Word From Karen...

“For I give you good doctrine; forsake not my law” (Prov. 4:2).

This coming week, we will be observing Shavuot, which commemorates the giving of the Torah/instructions of God at Mt. Sinai.  This was the first Pentecost where the Lord gave the law/instructions to Moses for all of Israel to obey.  One of the main purposes of Shavuot was to demonstrate that God was speaking to man (Exod. 19 and 20).  God’s desire was and is to speak to man and have man obey every Word out of His mouth and to never be stiff-necked and disobey Him.  God still speaks through the Word and through the Spirit, and still expects man to obey.

In the book of Acts chapter 2, we see the fulfillment of Shavuot.  The believers were baptized in fire, just as the fire of God rested upon Mt. Sinai.  They began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4)  God was speaking to man and as men’s tongues were heard, those present declared that they were hearing the wonderful works of God. (Acts 2:11)

WHAT IS PRESENT AT EVERY PENTECOST? 1

Present at every Pentecost is a mountain, angels, people, God and God’s voice.

Today, we are able to have a continuing personal Pentecost. Heb. 12:14-29).

The mountain we now go to is made of:

  1. Angels (in joyful assembly) – Heb. 12:22
  2. Church (of the firstborn) – v. 23
  3. God (judge of all men) – v. 23
  4. Spirits (of righteous men) – v. 23
  5. Jesus (mediator of a new covenant) – v. 24
  6. Blood (sprinkled) – v. 24

Every day we can go to the spiritual Mt. Zion to hear the Lord speak to us.  As we come before the Lord, He speaks to us.  As we hear what He says and obey what we heard, and obediently do what he has said, like the Israelites at the 1st Pentecost, we can say as they did, “We are hearing the wonderful works of God.”  And, “We will do everything the Lord has said” (Exod. 19:8).

Join us Sunday at OTC, as we celebrate Shavuot.

Many blessings,

Karen J
