A Word From Karen

BLESSINGS AND CURSES

“Behold I set before you this day a blessing and a curse” (Deut. 11:26)

Understanding “blessings” and the “covenant” necessary to obtain them is of the utmost importance to God’s people. All blessings are linked to the covenant God made with Abraham. God established His covenant with Abraham by splitting a three-year old heifer, ram and she-goat (Gen. 15:9), thereby showing us that covenants are connected to the shedding of blood. The covenant that God made with Abraham is still valid and very much alive today. This covenant is a living, perpetual covenant.

The process of splaying, or splitting is important to know because it shows that there are consequences if either partner breaches the terms of the covenant.

All the blessings that the Lord wants to bestow upon us are linked to the covenant God made with Abraham. We are to study the life of Abraham and follow his example (Isaiah 51:2). We are to “look” to Abraham. That means we are to scan him intently so that we may know his ways.

Once we enter into covenant with the Lord, there is no turning back. In the journey of Abraham, God progressively revealed Himself to him and transformed him. He gave him a vision and a purpose. He was told that he would become a great nation, be a father of many nations, that kings would come out of him and that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through him.

Understanding blessings and covenant are part of Kingdom dominion. We will soon be studying blessings and how to bless your families. There are serious consequences in the lives of children who have not received the blessing from their fathers and mothers. Many have not been able to break free and fulfil their destinies as adults because of lack of a blessing.

The fruit of blessings, however, are contingent upon our obedience.

“The secret (deeper counsel through intimacy with God) of the Lord is with them that fear Him, and He will show them His covenant” (Psalm 25:14). In Deut. 28 we see 14 blessings and 54 curses. Why 14 blessings?

14 in the Hebrew alphabet is the position of the “Nun” pronounced “noon”. In Modern Hebrew, the Nun is a representation of a fish. A fish is significant because it is a symbol of being prolific. Fish can lay thousands of eggs. Atlantic Salmon can repeat the spawning cycle for years. The fish is a sign of being fruitful. The Nun also represents life and continuation. Most importantly, the Nun is a name for the Messiah and the Messianic Kingdom.

Through Christ the Messiah, we have become partakers in the covenant of Abraham. If we are Christ’s, then we are also Abraham’s seed. Being grafted into Abraham’s lineage, the blessings of Abraham also come upon us (Gal. 3:6-14). Praise God!

I want you to be blessed.
